Escape from Tarkov is widely considered the founder of the modern extraction shooter genre. Since its first closed alpha in August 2016, Battlestate Games' realistic ballistics, brutal loss-aversion, and uncompromising hardcore approach have shaped nearly every genre entry that followed, from Arena Breakout to Gray Zone Warfare.
After nine years in beta, Tarkov finally reached version 1.0 in November 2025, including its first Steam release alongside the game's own launcher. A console version is reportedly in development. Anyone wanting to understand where the genre's DNA of wipe cycles, ballistics simulation, and merciless PvPvE comes from can't really skip Tarkov. Nearly a decade after first access, it remains one of the genre's most uncompromising entries.
