DMZ Beta (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2)

DMZ was Call of Duty's first serious attempt at bringing the extraction formula into its own franchise. Embedded in Warzone 2.0 within Modern Warfare II, operator squads explored the open Al Mazrah map, ran faction-based missions, and ultimately had to reach an exfil point themselves to keep their loot. Launched in November 2022, the mode was part of the CoD ecosystem for two years before it was officially discontinued in December 2023. No new content has been added since, though older versions remain partly accessible. It's an interesting case study in genre history: a AAA blockbuster adapting the extraction format for a mass audience, even though long-term support never materialized.
