Dark and Darker was the first title to consistently translate the extraction formula into a dungeon-fantasy setting. Instead of open maps, players explore procedurally generated, grim dungeons as one of several classes such as fighter, ranger, or cleric, grabbing loot and racing for the portal exit while other player parties and monsters lurk nearby.
After a controversial start, including a legal dispute with former employer Nexon, Ironmace launched Early Access on Steam in August 2023. The class-based combat system, with skill-dependent melee, magic, and traps, has since built a loyal niche audience. It's a genuinely distinct alternative to the genre's mostly military-themed shooters.
