Developer GOOD FUN CORPORATION just published its most detailed breakdown yet of extraction in its PvPvE shooter HUNGER, covering everything from the 30-second timer to a reworked Deadsmoke warning system. Buried in the same update is the answer players have been asking for since the last Technical Test: when the Open Beta and Early Access launch are actually happening.

TL;DR – What You Need to Know

  • Missive XIII goes deep on how extraction actually works in HUNGER
  • Extraction Zones run a 30-second timer that now counts backward instead of resetting when you leave the radius
  • Deadsmoke only triggers when two or more separate parties are inside the Extraction Zone at once
  • GOOD FUN CORPORATION is splitting the team between polishing the Early Access build and building the first major content update
  • No Open Beta date yet, sign-ups are open on the Steam page
  • Early Access is still targeted for 2026

What Is Missive XIII?

Missive XIII is the latest developer blog post for HUNGER, GOOD FUN CORPORATION's Napoleonic PvPvE extraction shooter. Unlike earlier missives, this one focuses almost entirely on a single core system: extraction, meaning how you actually leave an Expedition. It's paired with a lengthy development update covering everything the studio has changed since Tech Test 3.

How HUNGER's New Extraction Timer Works

Step into an active Extraction Zone and a 30-second timer starts automatically. Once it finishes, you're eligible to extract, but nothing happens on its own: you still have to physically reach the balloon and interact with it.
That's deliberate. GOOD FUN CORPORATION doesn't want the game pulling you out of a fight automatically just because your timer happened to finish at the wrong moment.

The Timer Counts Backward Instead of Resetting

Leave the zone while the timer is still running and it doesn't snap back to zero. Instead it counts backward: five seconds left, then five seconds spent outside the zone, and you're back to ten seconds remaining once you re-enter.
That gives you real room to dodge, reload, or chase down another player without losing all your progress instantly. Stay outside too long, though, and you'll eventually land back at the full 30 seconds.

Party Extraction: One Timer for the Whole Group

Whoever from your party enters the Extraction Zone first starts the timer for everyone, and anyone who joins later inherits that progress. Actually extracting stays individual, though: every player has to reach the balloon and interact with it themselves, so a party can easily get split up in the final moments.

Extraction Balloons: Visible, but Never Predictable

Extraction Points only go live once a balloon physically descends into the world, visible from a long way off. Once it lands, the surrounding Extraction Zone activates and the 30-second timer becomes available.
Each region has more than ten possible landing spots, according to GOOD FUN CORPORATION, with only a handful actually used in any given Expedition. Learn the map well enough and you'll recognize potential landing sites, but you'll never know in advance which ones are live in a particular run.

Deadsmoke: Less Ambiguity Around Extraction Camping

Previously, Deadsmoke could trigger just from a single party lingering near the balloon too long. It often left players unsure whether the extraction was actually contested or not. Following feedback from Tech Test 3, it now only activates when two or more separate parties are inside the zone at the same time, and the detection range has been increased.
Important: this isn't meant to stop extraction ambushes. Deadsmoke stays a visual warning only, deliberately without an audio alarm, and simply tells you the extraction is genuinely contested right now.

When Extraction Points Open During an Expedition

The first Extraction Balloon lands shortly after an Expedition begins, while the timing of the second and final balloon varies from run to run. Once that final balloon arrives, the NPC Reynauld broadcasts a warning across the region, and a visible 10-minute countdown starts. When it hits zero, the Expedition ends, and anyone still inside is lost.

A Hidden Third Extraction, Unlocked Through Masteries

Certain Masteries grant access to a third, hidden Extraction Balloon during a run, one that players without the right Mastery can't even see. Character progression here changes more than your combat power; it changes what you know about the map itself.

What's Next for Extraction: Player-Controlled Balloons and Item Extraction

GOOD FUN CORPORATION is planning two bigger additions to the system throughout Early Access: player-controlled extraction points, and smaller gadget balloons that let you send valuable items home without leaving the Expedition yourself. Finding something rare won't automatically mean cutting your run short.

Development Update: Polish Now, First Big Content Update Later

Part of the team is currently focused on polishing the Early Access launch build, while a growing second group is already building the first major content update, planned for roughly three to four months after Early Access launches. Since Tech Test 3, GOOD FUN CORPORATION says it has touched "almost every part of the game," including the Mastery trees, movement, equipment, UI, matchmaking, and a major fix to the lunge mechanic.

Combat Balance, a New Vault Indicator, and a Reworked Extraction Effect

  • Melee weapon damage was rebalanced to cut down on one-shot kills without losing HUNGER's overall lethality
  • The parry system got further refinements aimed at making melee fights easier to read
  • A new HUD icon now shows whether an object is actually vaultable. Previously, players would attempt to vault something that wasn't interactable, wasting stamina in the process
  • The combat log and several UI elements got readability passes
  • The visual effect that plays on extraction was replaced entirely; the old one was expensive to maintain and never landed the way the team wanted

Equip Time vs. Draw Time: Weapon Swapping Gets Slower

GOOD FUN CORPORATION now separates "drawing" a weapon you already have equipped from "equipping" one out of your bags. Equipping used to be instant, which let players carry multiple high-capacity weapons and cycle through all of them mid-fight. Now equipping takes real time, similar to how putting on armor already works.

Blood Bags Now Heal Faster the Longer You Commit

Healing from severe injuries with a Blood Bag used to take up to seven minutes because the recovery rate stayed flat. Now, the longer you use a Blood Bag continuously, the faster it heals. Severe injuries stay risky, but recovery no longer scales into absurd territory. Repair Tongs got the same treatment.

The First Major Update: New Weapons, New Hunger, New Map

For the first major content update after Early Access launch, GOOD FUN CORPORATION says it's already working on several new weapons, new types of Hunger (the game's monster faction), and an entirely new map. More details are expected closer to release.

So, When Does HUNGER Actually Launch?

Missive XIII doesn't give an exact Open Beta date. GOOD FUN CORPORATION says it's still lining up exactly when it will announce those dates, and sign-ups are already open through the Steam page.
The Early Access plan itself hasn't changed: HUNGER is still targeted for an Early Access launch sometime in 2026, without a specific date attached yet. According to the Steam store page, GOOD FUN CORPORATION expects to stay in Early Access for roughly two years before a full release. Once a firm date lands, we'll add it to our release calendar.
