Battlestate Games forced the popular fan project SPT (Single Player Tarkov) to shut down its entire infrastructure in early August 2026: Forge, domain, patch hosting, all offline.
Less than two weeks later, the successor is already standing: under the name Single Player Tushonka, the whole mod platform is running again, complete with a migrated database, a new GitHub org, and active development.
The Trigger: a Notice That Asked for Less Than What Happened
Battlestate Games' legal team sent SPT lead Refringe a trademark violation notice in late July over the domain sp-tarkov.com. The core issue was the use of the protected term "Tarkov" in the domain name and across the project website. The notice demanded a new domain, the removal of BSG trademarks from the site's content, and a clear break from anything that could be confused with the official game. A full shutdown of development was never actually part of the demand.
The team pulled the plug anyway. SPT developer DrakiaXYZ made that unmistakably clear on Discord on August 1: "This is the end of the SPT Project under the current team, and in its current form."
A Leak Speeds Up the Announcement
Before the team was ready to go public, internal communications leaked online, and community members started building their own theories around them. That forced an earlier announcement than planned. Staff member RaiRaiTheRaichu later clarified the real cause: the leak wasn't why development ended, the trademark notice was. What the leak actually changed was simpler: the old GitHub organization couldn't be handed off directly to a new team anymore.
What Actually Went Offline on August 12
The original infrastructure came down on schedule. The original SPT Forge, the sp-tarkov.com domain, and patch hosting were all discontinued by August 12, 2026. The sp-tarkov GitHub organization stayed behind, archived and read-only, but its source code remained publicly accessible.
That open source code turned out to be exactly what the next few days needed.
The Successor: Single Player Tushonka Is Already Live
The new name sidesteps the trademark problem elegantly by simply swapping "Tarkov" for "Tushonka," the Russian canned meat that shows up as an actual item in the game. The SPT acronym stays intact. Alex Tanker built an entirely new Forge page at sp-mod.com, and the database migration is already done: every mod, along with its listings and public info, carried over from the old Forge. Popular mods like Skipper (over 300,000 downloads) or Project Fika are already back and searchable, with only a handful of mod preview images still missing.
On GitHub, the new SP-Tushonka organization is verified against the domain sp-tushonka.com, with its own repositories for the installer, Forge, wiki, and an ongoing C# rewrite of the server. There's also a new wiki at wiki.sp-tushonka.com serving as the central hub for beginner and modding guides. Development is being led by Archangel, one of the project's existing core developers. Former SPT maintainer Chomp publicly voiced confidence in the restart, calling Alex and Archangel extremely competent: SPT, in his words, is "in safe hands."
What Players Need to Know Right Now
Anyone with a working SPT install doesn't need to do anything at all. The move only affects the websites and accounts, not the local installation:
- Existing installations keep running unchanged, no reinstall needed
- Mod authors and co-owners can recover their old Forge account using the same email address as before, or by logging in through Discord
- If you only ever used the old Forge to download mods, you'll need to create a new account on sp-mod.com
- If the recovery email doesn't show up, check your spam folder, some providers flag mail from the new domain
- A new, improved installer is planned to let you choose directly between SPT 4.0 and SPT 4.1, without going through the full manual install
Just a few days ago, the project's future looked anything but secure, and the comment sections under the first shutdown videos were full of genuine panic. Now the Forge is back up, the mods are safe, and development is, in the words of everyone involved, full steam ahead.
