Bungie has laid out a roadmap for Marathon running through March 2027, and it plans to push the game well beyond pure extraction.

PvEvP stays, but it becomes just one piece of the puzzle alongside permanent PvE, direct PvP and an entirely new zone.

Bungie owns its mistakes

It started on September 21 with an open letter from studio head Poria Torkan and Josh Deane, Head of Product and General Manager of Marathon. The new leadership admits Bungie has lost player trust over the last few years. On Marathon, they say the game was well received by critics but did not reach as many players as hoped, and that it needs to evolve.

After this summer's layoffs, that is a pretty candid statement. Bungie also promises to communicate more often and more openly, especially when plans change.

October, December, March: three steps

Three days later, Game Director Del and Julia from the Marathon team followed up with the actual plan:

  • October, Nightfall Refresh: a fresh start for progression, rewards and the live game.
  • December, Symbiosis: the first permanent PvE mode, a bigger Perimeter, a new shell, better onboarding and a social space.
  • March: connected PvE, PvP and PvEvP modes, deeper progression, a refactored Cradle, more story, new enemies and an entirely new zone.

What Symbiosis brings in December

Perimeter is getting a full visual overhaul. A new fungal ecosystem spreads across the zone, changes familiar spots and opens new routes. There are new points of interest too, topped off by a fight against the Tick Queen, which Bungie calls the biggest enemy in the game so far.

  • Bishop: the new shell, a robot samurai built for speed, surprise and big bursts of melee damage.
  • Team Deathmatch: an experimental mode to practise and compete without risking a full run.
  • Social space: a CyAc-sponsored hub with a firing range for testing weapons and abilities.
  • Onboarding: new players should no longer have to learn everything at once.

March is where it all connects

Bungie describes the March update as much bigger than Symbiosis. That is when PvE, PvP and PvEvP are meant to work as one connected system, with different intensity levels for solo players and crews. It also adds new onboarding, more shell progression, focused questlines, new aliens and a new zone the studio is keeping quiet about for now.

Good news for fans of the original trilogy: Tau Ceti IV is supposed to feel more alien and tie back more closely to the classic Marathon games. As Bungie puts it, it is not Marathon without the Pfhor.
