Antediluvian Interactive has released the free Steam demo for Expedition: Into Darkness, opening its grim, ruin-strewn dungeons to everyone for the first time.

Two full maps, co-op for up to four players and honest-to-god permadeath are all in, though the community isn't fully sold on it yet.

What's actually in the demo

This isn't a stripped-down teaser. According to the developers, the demo is a full preview build packing the same mechanics and content planned for the finished game, so you get a real sense of what you're signing up for. Two massive maps are up for grabs, playable solo or with up to four friends.

The goal stays the same every run: drag forbidden knowledge and riches out of the ruins and make it back out alive. The demo eats up roughly 20 GB of disk space, and a Ryzen 5 3600X paired with a Radeon RX 580 is enough to get started, per the official system requirements.

Building weapons piece by piece

Instead of grabbing finished gear off a shop shelf, you assemble your whole arsenal yourself. Swords, maces, axes, polearms, spears, bows and crossbows all snap together from individual components, and materials, tints and liveries let you fine-tune the look afterward. One piece of community feedback on the demo already asked for individual parts to affect stats like protection, mobility or skills down the line, right now the differences are mostly cosmetic.

Die once, and your loot dies with you

Die in the ruins and you lose your character and everything they were carrying, for good. Only players who make it back to the surface keep their haul, anything stashed in the base camp stays safe no matter what happens on the next run. Resources you drag back fund upgrades to that base camp, which in turn make the next expedition a little easier.

A pact with dark gods always costs something

Want more power? You can reach beyond the Empyrean and strike deals with dark gods for forbidden strength. The catch: every pact comes with a price the game doesn't spell out upfront. Fitting the tone, the developers themselves warn of blood, violence and dismemberment throughout.

How is the community reacting?

Since launch day, the demo has already picked up more than 140 user reviews on Steam, and the overall picture is mixed.

What players are praising:

  • The modular weapon and armor system is landing well, several players compare the build-it-yourself approach to Escape from Tarkov's crafting
  • Creators like Lord PeteyTV say every weapon feels genuinely thought out in combat, especially in co-op with friends
  • The dungeon-crawler-meets-extraction-looter mix is coming across as a fresh angle for the genre

What players are criticizing:

  • Loot balance still feels off, starting gear sometimes outclasses what you dig up later
  • Enemy AI reacts too much as a group, once one enemy sounds the alarm, the whole room seems to notice at once
  • There's no matchmaking, so anyone wanting a full four-player squad has to organize it themselves through Discord or a friends list

The numbers: 56 percent of the 144 reviews so far are positive, which currently earns the demo a "Mixed" rating on Steam.

Quick answers about the demo

Is the demo free?

Yes, it's available for free on Steam, independent of the eventual full release.

When does the full game come out?

Steam's store page lists Q4 2026 for Expedition: Into Darkness, no fixed date yet.

Can I play the demo solo?

Yes, you can head in alone or team up with up to four friends. There's no matchmaking for strangers built in right now.

That leaves Antediluvian Interactive some runway before the planned Q4 2026 launch to work on enemy AI and loot balance. Have you already run the ruins yourself? Drop your impressions in the comments.
